Posted: 01 Dec 2011 03:45 AM PST 'The X Factor' Michael Jackson Night: This Is It? "The biggest star of all time, a double elimination--no pressure!" intoned Simon Cowell at the start of this Wednesday's "X Factor" show, on which the top seven performed the songs of Michael Jackson in some sort of presumed unofficial celebration of this week's Dr. Conrad Murray sentencing. Simon was, of course, referring to another sentencing [...]
Posted: 30 Nov 2011 10:05 PM PST Bon Iver: From the Wisconsin Woods to Grammy Favorites Going into tonight's Grammy Nominations show, no one could have predicted that Lady Gaga, the biggest artist on the planet and the singer who both opened and closed the nomination concert, would receive fewer nominations than Bon Iver, a bearded pack of folk rockers from rural Wisconsin. Entering this evening, the biggest honor ever bestowed [...]
Posted: 30 Nov 2011 06:57 PM PST Week Ending Nov. 27, 2011. Songs: The Record Rihanna Would Like To Shed Rihanna has achieved many milestones on the pop charts in recent years. She has amassed 11 #1 hits, a tally matched by only seven other artists since 1955. But she holds one record that I guarantee you she would like to shed. She has had more #1 hits, by far, than any other artist who [...]
Posted: 30 Nov 2011 06:10 PM PST Depeche Mode Covers My earliest musical memories come from way back in grade school, when even a fifth grader could feel the palpable tension between the disco and rock & roll crowds. I think it may have been the Rolling Stones Some Girls album that cemented my young identity soundly with rock & roll.
Posted: 30 Nov 2011 03:01 PM PST Javier Colon's Voice Not Heard on Billboard Charts Earlier this year, I assumed contestants on "The Voice" had a distinct sales advantage over the hopefuls on rival show "American Idol." I assumed that by counting iTunes downloads as actual votes--something "Idol" and similar shows do not do--"The Voice" would be better at predicting which contestants would fare well in the actual pop marketplace.
Posted: 30 Nov 2011 02:13 PM PST Vinny From 'Jersey Shore' Wisely Had Second Thoughts About His Rap Career When the worlds of reality TV and pop music collide, the results are never good. For example, when Kim Kardashian collaborated with The-Dream, or every Real Housewife that thinks they can sing. Earlier today, Vinny from 'Jersey Shore' tried his hand at hip-hop by posting a song called "Rack City Mix." (Was he jealous of [...]
Posted: 30 Nov 2011 12:35 PM PST The Amp's Dark Horse Grammy Nomination Wishlist Tonight marks the prologue to "Music's Biggest Night," the Grammy Nominations special, with artists like Adele, Kanye West, and Taylor Swift just hours away from receiving trophy nods aplenty. The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences is so predictable, they might as well just call the February 12, 2012 Grammy ceremony "My Beautiful Dark [...]
Posted: 30 Nov 2011 10:58 AM PST Charts: 'Christmas' Defeats Nickelback and Rihanna in Black Friday Battle Who's Number One? 'Christmas' won an incredibly tight Black Friday sales race as Michael Bublé's seasonal disc barely edged the week's biggest debut, Nickelback's 'Here and Now'. In the days leading up to the Black Friday surge, the Canadian rockers were the favorites to take the top spot ahead of Rihanna's 'Talk That Talk', thanks [...]
Posted: 30 Nov 2011 10:58 AM PST Week Ending Nov. 27, 2011. Albums: Buble Wins A Squeaker Michael Buble's Christmas steps up to #1 on The Billboard 200, with sales of 227K copies. But if his album had sold just 500 fewer copies, Nickelback's Here And Now would have come out on top. It was the closest race for #1 in more than four years. The last time such a small margin [...]

From the pages of Melody Maker, published in January 1979—Barney Hoskyns, Editorial Director, Rock's Backpages UP AT THE RITZ Hotel in Piccadilly, the air of 19th century [...] |
Posted: 30 Nov 2011 08:32 AM PST Watch Morrissey Perform New Track 'People Are the Same Everywhere' on 'Conan' The same day Morrissey was honored with a PETA "Famous Vegetarians" postage stamp, the former Smiths frontman and his same shirt-wearing backing band dropped by 'Conan' for a rare television performance. (O'Brien didn't interview Moz, which prevented the singer from saying something stupid again.) Morrissey performed his new track "People Are the Same Everywhere," one [...]
Posted: 30 Nov 2011 07:41 AM PST Stanley Hudson From 'The Office' Satirized LMFAO Leslie David Baker is well known as "sassy" sales rep and crossword junkie Stanley Hudson on 'The Office', but in addition to working at Dundler Mifflin, the actor also apparently has some pop music aspirations. Or maybe this is just a Funny or Die skit or an 'Office' DVD exclusive.
